Parenting Program Helps Family Settle in To New Start

“Are you sure this is downtown?” Tiana Shannon asked someone nearby who told her they had lived in Green Bay for 30 years and what she saw was definitely downtown Green Bay. Tiana looked around incredulously at the small buildings. It wasn’t Chicago but it was close to home with Midwest weather and much lower rent.  It was also a new start for her, her 6 year old daughter, Jaliyah and the baby she was expecting. The new start she needed.

Shortly after she packed up her car and moved to Green Bay she was referred to Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W. along with their Parents as Teachers program. She was hesitant at first but was told the program was very helpful. She’s glad it was recommended to her.

The Parents as Teachers program, is an evidence based home visitation program. The parent educator can assist families with child development and offer education on parenting, communications, behavior and community support systems available. A year later she finds the program still very helpful.

In addition to the home visits, she appreciates that Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W. offers including the group connects, kids’ activities, Fly a Kite Fest and other community events.

Tiana says the program helps you with various areas of parenting and could be beneficial for many parents. “I think it would be beneficial for parents because it could help them with different things they are struggling in.”

Tiana has made the area her home with her daughters and has settled in with help from Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W. Tiana has a job she enjoys, Jaliyah is doing well in second grade and baby Timea is at a childcare program down the road from their apartment.  She finds the Parents as Teachers program has been very helpful. “It means a lot and we enjoy the parenting program.”

The Parents as Teachers program at Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W. recently had a cut in funding despite being recognized as a quality program. Many families will move to a lengthy wait list if donors don’t come forward. Make a gift to the Jessica Raymaker Memorial Support Fund to help families in Northeast Wisconsin.
