Running of the Bols

As we are getting ready for Fly A Kite Fest presented by BayCare Clinic, we noticed we still get the question, “What is the running of the bols?” At Fly A Kite Fest we enjoy the race but found it’s a tough race to describe!

The American Kitefliers Association says the “Running of the Bols” is like a “tug of war with the wind.” “Bols” are large parachute-like kites that are used as line or ground decorations. The Running of the Bols is when contestants are asked to race each other.

Contestants will stand with a 10-foot bol at the downwind side of the field then race against each other while they also battle Mother Nature. It is a fun event to watch but not as easy as it looks according to past participants.

This year children will be able to try out the race with smaller parachute kites during the Associated Bank Running of the Bols, which will be taking place throughout the day.

At Fly A Kite Fest, you will see the Celebrity Running of the Bols, which features familiar local faces. This running of the bols is known for its fun and surprises, so who knows who will win our race in 2017.

Please join us for a fun-filled day of kites at the Arnie Wolff Sports Complex on June 24, 2017 from 10 am- 4 pm. The celeb race will be at 1:30 pm.  Hope you come check out the runners and enjoy a day of kites. It’s a fun day while raising awareness to healthy child development programs at Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W.
