What is the Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Provider Certification?

The Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Provider Certification is a statewide coordinated initiative supported by the Wisconsin Breastfeeding Coalition (WBC) and the Wisconsin Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative (WECOPI). It includes the ten steps to Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Centers. We offer training, personal consultation and resources to support those ten steps. We network with our local Brown County Breastfeeding Coalition. Brown County and Family & Childcare Resources staff support this initiative.

Why should a child care provider become designated as breastfeeding friendly?

The benefits to the child care provider include opportunities for family engagement, assistance in achieving YoungStar points, healthy child outcomes, resources and positive marketing to the community and local families.

The goal is to implement best practices and policies that support breastfeeding in early care and education environments. The focus is on provider education and improving the child care environment so that mothers who work (also work-site certified) at the center, or bring their child to the center can be confident that they will be successful in meeting their breastfeeding goals. Policies, procedures and practices are defined. After completing the ten steps with us by visits to the center, the child care centers are recognized by the WBC and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services as “Breastfeeding Friendly” and we present them with the framed certification.
